RAPE: Richard Smith, 19th March 1836.
Sheffield Independent
Saturday 19th March 1836
NOTTINGHAM LENT ASSIZES.
Charge of Rape.
On Monday, Richard Smith, aged 45 years, was charged with having committed an aggravated assauit upon Mary Green, a young girl, fourteen years of age, on the 24th of July last. The details of the transaction, as delivered in evidence by the girl and the medical gentleman, were of such a nature as to preclude the possibility of their appearing in print but it appeared that Smith had taken advantage of his wife's absence from home to instil into the drink provided for the girl's supper some deleterious drug, which had the effect of falling her into forgetfulness, when he subsequently committed the crime for which he waa brought fo justice.
The Jury found the prisoner Guilty, and the Learned Judge passed the awful sentence of death upon him holding out no hopes that the sentence would in the slightest degree be commuted.
